Southeast Asia continued to grapple with the complex challenges of terrorism, radicalisation and internal conflict, as last week’s news indicated.

The Philippines continued to tackle communist insurgency. While the military claimed to have weakened the communist insurgent group, clashes continued, resulting in fatalities. The government's reintegration programme offered a path for former insurgents to return to society, but the threat of violence remained a concern, particularly during elections. The military also shifted its focus to external defence, recognising the evolving nature of security threats.

Efforts to achieve peace in southern Thailand remained a key focus, with the Thai Prime Minister emphasising Malaysia's crucial role in facilitating dialogue and negotiations. However, these efforts were complicated by the ongoing separatist insurgency, from which bombing attacks have been occurring almost every week in the past few weeks now in the restive region, as you can see if you’ve been following my most recent weekly summaries.
